Today I fished a local lake for bass and wiper. It was raining when I arrived at the lake with light winds out of the south/east so I decided to start out fishing the wind blown grass beds for bass. I've been trying to perfect a fly that resembles a stick bait or rouge jerk bait that will suspend just in the water above the grass and logs. I started throwing my concoction and on the first bank i had a fish protecting the nest come out and en hale the fly. I ran this pattern around the lake a found that the fish were moving into the grass, some were setting up to spawn and other were cashing the shad that were spawning in the grass. This lake has a mix now of prespawn, spawning and post spawn fish so fishing is wide open depending on how you want to fish. Between fishing the grass beds I also fished for wipers but did not get any takers. I would have also liked to sight fish for carp but with all the rains we are getting the lake was high and muddy. The bass fishing is really good now and fishing the grass I saw most of the takes. I threw a couple of my new top water flies by Kevin Price and had a couple of blow ups but now hook ups. I still think its a couple of weeks away.
